Psalms 129

129:1
שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת רַבַּת צְרָרוּנִי מִנְּעוּרַי יֹאמַר־נָא יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
A Song of Ascents. 'Much have they afflicted me from my youth up', Let Israel now say;

129:2
רַבַּת צְרָרוּנִי מִנְּעוּרָי גַּם לֹא־יָכְלוּ לִי׃
'Much have they afflicted me from my youth up; But they have not prevailed against me.
129:3
עַל־גַּבִּי חָרְשׁוּ חֹרְשִׁים הֶאֱרִיכוּ למענותם [לְמַעֲנִיתָם׃]
The plowers plowed upon my back; They made long their furrows.

יְהוָה צַדִּיק קִצֵּץ עֲבוֹת רְשָׁעִים׃
The LORD is righteous; He hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.'
129:5
יֵבֹשׁוּ וְיִסֹּגוּ אָחוֹר כֹּל שֹׂנְאֵי צִיּוֹן׃
Let them be ashamed and turned backward, All they that hate Zion.
129:6
יִהְיוּ כַּחֲצִיר גַּגּוֹת שֶׁקַּדְמַת שָׁלַף יָבֵשׁ׃
Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, Which withereth afore it springeth up;

שֶׁלֹּא מִלֵּא כַפּוֹ קוֹצֵר וְחִצְנוֹ מְעַמֵּר׃
Wherewith the reaper filleth not his hand, Nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

וְלֹא אָמְרוּ הָעֹבְרִים בִּרְכַּת־יְהוָה אֲלֵיכֶם בֵּרַכְנוּ אֶתְכֶם בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה׃
Neither do they that go by say: ‘The blessing of the LORD be upon you; We bless you in the name of the LORD.'

Resilience through repeated hardship

'Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth' speaks for the nation as a whole, describing repeated historical suffering using the image of a plowed field, furrows cut into the back. Resilience through repeated hardship, not just a single crisis...
